Part 1
Aperture
The aperture is how wide open the iris of the camera’s lens is. This is just like the iris in our own eyes that lets light in.
If you change the aperture to a low number, it would open the iris to let more light in.
If you let in too much light, the picture becomes very bright – this is called overexposing the picture. If you, however, change the aperture to a higher number it will let less light in but possibly underexpose your picture and it would be dark.
Depth of Field
You can use the lens aperture to change the depth of field. A wide aperture gives a narrow depth of field, which means that there are less areas that are in focus in the picture.
You can see this in my photo “Peace” below where I chose a narrow depth of field so only a small amount of the text at the top of the page is not blurred.
A small aperture lets in less light, but gives a wide depth of field. You can see this in my photo “Love” below where all of the cat and surroundings are in focus.
Shutter Speed
The shutter speed is how fast the camera lets light though the lens to the film or sensor at the back which actually takes the photo.
A short shutter speed is used when an object is moving quickly and you want to freeze it in time so it is not blurry. The picture will be darker because it lets in less light.
A long shutter speed is used when it’s dark to let more light in so the picture isn’t under exposed. You can also use this to blur objects on purpose, like waterfalls. Be careful not to over expose your picture.
Rule of Thirds
This is where you divide your photo into three sections across and up and down. If you put the subject of the photo on one of the “thirds” lines it create a nice composition.
You can see this in my photo “Moment to arise” below, where I placed the bird on the left.
Sometimes you can break this rule and still a very good photo, like “Adventure” below.
Part 2
All of the following photos were taken and edited by me. I cropped them to the best composition and then adjusted brightness, contract, highlights, shadows, sharpness and saturation (colour) in Google Picasa.
Moment to Arise

A picture of a blackbird taken at National Trust Nymans Gardens. I like looking at birds and taking photographs of them because it makes me feel excited and interested in what they are doing. One of my favourite songs is Blackbird by the Beatles
Peace

I love reading. It just takes me into another world particularly when I feel upset. A few of my favourite authors are Tom Fletcher, Miranda Hart, David Badiel and Geri Halliwell-Horner.
Enjoyment

I love making music, it expresses how I feel and I love how I can make my own tunes. I really like to play things that I really enjoy listening to and if others hear it to, it makes me happy.
Adventure

I love nature and spending time outdoors; it makes me feel relaxed listening to the sounds around me. I always wanted to take a photo looking up at a tree and I love how this turned out. This is a tree also taken at National Trust Nymans Gardens
Hungry

Pizza is one of my favourite foods and makes me excited to eat it every time I have it. It is fun to make and I find it satisfying to watch it all come together.
Pieces of my heart

Lego is one of my favourite things to do in my spare time. I find it relaxing listening to the click sound when you put the pieces together. I love displaying my creations in my house. My favourite thing I have built so far is the camera in this photograph.
The bloom of my soul

I love flowers because they make me feel like I can express myself in any way. They make me feel relaxed and calm. I love the different textures and the different colours that flowers have. This is a magnolia flower taken at National Trust Nymans Gardens.
Togetherness

Board games are a time that our family comes together. Playing them makes me feel happy and I like spending time together very much. We usually play them at weekends and sometimes munch on snacks! This board game is called Carcassonne and we have 3 expansion packs for it, so far!
Love

Honey is my pride and joy. I just adore stroking her and spending time with her. She makes me feel very happy and I love coming home to see her. She is a Cream Burmese and is 14 years old. She is very cute!
Cricket

Cricket is a time I can express myself during sport. It’s a time where I can show my competitive side and get excited. I feel proud and lifted after a game and exercise.
